Hannah peelDerek had a wicked sense of humour and always a twinkle in his eye. He also hated veggies. I do remember, however he once LOVEd and couldn't get enough of a slice my mum made... she kept feeding him them, and only after the 3rd or 4th one told him they were made of zucchini... his face was priceless. I also remember how much he loved him MG!
Ciara HehirSuch a kind and wonderful man, he always made everyone feel welcomed and happy.
I got to know Derek as a fellow member of the St Andrews Uniting Church at Richmond over the last year. I was so Shocked when I heard of Dereks Passing. He has such a Zest for life, and was so generous and hardworking, and did so much for his church and all the other organisations he was involved in. He will be greatly missed by all, especially by his devoted wife Maggie and all his family. He touched me in a way not many people have, and I am so sorry and sad that he is no longer with us, but knowing he is in our Gods warm embrace
Gerrard Ross VeitchDerek the Fielder
keith leslieMany summers ago, a game of under-10s cricket was conducted in our front yard with the young batters and bowlers being drawn from the Scott and Leslie clans. As the front yard was bounded by low lying shrubs and trees, all four adults were positioned around the boundaries to, if possible, intercept any well struck ball that might result in the scoring of a four and, more importantly, to prevent loss of the ball in the undergrowth. Derek initially took an uncharacteristic keen interest in this role and was fully immersed in the game, until he noticed a problem with the tree located next to his fielding position. This tree had variegated leaves. However, Derek noticed that there were some new shoots that were entirely green, evidence that if left to grow would result in the tree becoming “plain leaf only”. Faced with this alarming prospect, Derek reverted to his true self, became oblivious to the game, and began methodically breaking off all of the offending green shoots. His efforts were rewarded by the tree remaining variegated for many more years.
Derek was truly a great fielder – when it came to agricultural matters.
